How to sell print-on-demand T-shirts on Etsy
This is a first-listing workshop, not another overview of opening a shop. Follow one fictional shirt from original artwork to a properly disclosed production partner, an honest listing and a checked order.
By POD Bundle editorial ·
Quick answer
Create an original shirt design that qualifies under Etsy’s Creativity Standards, connect a POD supplier, disclose the production partner and publish an accurate physical-product listing. Price for all fees and shipping, fund fulfillment separately from Etsy payouts, and inspect a sample before scaling.
Check whether your artwork qualifies
Etsy’s “designed by a seller” category includes a seller’s original designs made by a production partner. The supplier can print the shirt; the creative work must still qualify as yours. Read Etsy’s Creativity Standards before buying artwork specifically for this purpose.
Commercial permission and Etsy eligibility are different. Permission to print a purchased file on products does not make that file your original design. Do not assume changing a color or phrase is enough. Etsy does not provide a universal percentage-of-editing safe harbor; keep evidence of your creative work and review the policy for your situation.
For this workshop, imagine you drew an original botanical illustration for a gardening T-shirt. The example is fictional, not a claimed bestseller or a keyword backed by sales data. Check the rights to any fonts, phrases or additional elements you use. If you use AI to create artwork, check Etsy’s disclosure requirements too.
Prepare one shirt and order a sample
Choose a blank, a print location and a small set of colors that suit your illustration. Check your POD provider’s file requirements for that exact product. Inspect the artwork at its intended print size, not just as a small screen preview.
Order a sample and confirm the print, fabric, size chart and care information. Photograph the product clearly and use any mockups only in ways that accurately show what the buyer receives and comply with Etsy’s image rules. Do not show extra print locations or garment features that are not included.
Record production estimates, delivery estimates and ship-from information. Processing time is not the same as transit time. Make your listing reflect the supplier you actually selected, not a best-case promise from a different provider.
Connect and disclose your production partner
Connect the supplier through its supported Etsy integration and confirm that products and variants map correctly. An integration can transfer data; it does not replace your review of the listing or your obligation to disclose production help.
- In Shop Manager, open Settings → Production partners, or add a partner while editing the listing.
- Identify the actual production partner and location using the information supplied by your provider.
- Describe your design role and what the partner does, such as printing and shipping.
- Associate the partner with each relevant listing; do not assume connection alone discloses it.
- Check the displayed ship-from location and delivery settings for accuracy.
Menu labels can change. Follow Etsy’s production-partner instructions for the current steps. If a network offers several print providers, use its guidance to identify who produces your chosen item instead of guessing an address.
Price the listing with Etsy fees included
Etsy’s published fee structure includes a $0.20 USD listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee on the order amount specified in its policy, including charged shipping and gift wrapping. Payment processing varies by the country of your bank account. Setup fees, taxes on fees, currency conversion, regulatory fees and advertising can also apply.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Shirt price with shipping included; excluding sales tax | $26.00 |
| Assumed production plus delivery | −$15.00 |
| Listing fee | −$0.20 |
| Transaction fee: 6.5% × $26 | −$1.69 |
| US processing example: 3% × $26 + $0.25 | −$1.03 |
| Remainder before other costs | $8.08 |
This simplified example assumes a US seller and no sales tax in the calculation. Processing fees can also apply to tax collected, where applicable. The $8.08 is before ads, refunds, subscriptions, labor, overhead and income taxes. Replace the assumptions with your current provider quote and country-specific processing fees.
If an order is attributed to Offsite Ads, an additional fee may apply under Etsy’s program rules. Check participation and rates in your account. Do not spend your full apparent margin on Etsy Ads without allowing for the other costs.
Write an accurate first listing
Illustrative title: Botanical Garden T-Shirt, Original Plant Illustration Tee. Use it only if it describes your actual product. A readable title is more useful to a shopper than a chain of repeated keywords or unsupported “bestseller” claims.
Illustrative opening: “A printed T-shirt featuring my original botanical illustration, made to order by my disclosed production partner. This listing is for one physical shirt, not a digital download. Please check the size chart and delivery estimate before ordering.”
Complete the description with verified fabric composition, fit, available sizes, print placement, care instructions and your return terms. Never guess those details or copy them from a different blank. Select the correct clothing category and relevant attributes; verify every size/color combination is available.
Example tag ideas: botanical shirt, garden t shirt, plant lover tee, gardening gift, leaf illustration, nature graphic tee, gardener shirt, botanical art tee, plant illustration, floral graphic tee, garden lover gift, nature lover shirt, printed garden tee. Each is within 20 characters, but none is a researched ranking promise; omit any that does not match your design.
Etsy allows up to 13 tags. Use varied, relevant phrases and complete applicable attributes. Avoid unrelated brands and keyword stuffing. You can draft alternatives with our free Etsy listing generator, then verify every material, size, shipping statement and rights-related claim before publishing.
Check the order workflow and improve from evidence
Publish the shirt as a physical item, not a download. Check its price, shipping profile, production partner and all variants in the buyer-facing listing. Confirm that your provider has the right artwork and a valid billing method.
In a typical connected-store setup, Etsy pays you under its payout schedule while the supplier charges you separately for production and shipping. New-shop payout delays or reserves can increase the gap. Keep fulfillment funds available and monitor order status rather than treating a buyer’s payment as immediately available cash.
- Inspect a sample before scaling the listing.
- Check that each ordered variant reaches the correct print file.
- Confirm tracking is transferred and delivery expectations remain accurate.
- Handle customer questions yourself and escalate production issues to your supplier.
- Track impressions, visits, paid orders, refunds and actual contribution.
Low impressions suggest reviewing relevance and demand; visits without purchases suggest reviewing the product, imagery, price or delivery. A few visits are not enough to declare success or failure. Change one major element at a time and record the result. More listings and more keywords are not substitutes for an offer buyers want.
Frequently asked questions
Does Etsy allow print-on-demand T-shirts?
Yes, when the item qualifies under Etsy’s rules. For a shirt designed by you and printed by a production partner, use your original design, disclose the partner and accurately state where it ships from. All other Etsy policies still apply.
Can I upload a purchased design bundle directly to Etsy POD?
A commercial license alone is not enough. Etsy’s designed-by-seller category requires seller-original designs. Do not assume an unchanged purchased design, a color change or an arbitrary amount of editing qualifies. Consult Etsy’s current Creativity Standards for your specific product.
Does Etsy pay Printful or Printify for my orders?
In a typical connected-store setup, no. Etsy collects the buyer’s payment and the POD supplier charges your billing method separately. Plan enough funds for fulfillment while Etsy payouts are pending.
How many Etsy tags should a T-shirt listing use?
Etsy supports up to 13 tags, with up to 20 characters per tag. Use relevant, varied phrases describing the actual product. Tags do not guarantee ranking, and irrelevant terms can mislead shoppers.
Is a POD T-shirt listing physical or digital?
Choose a physical item when the buyer will receive a printed shirt. A digital listing is for a file delivered to the buyer. The bundle’s license does not permit reselling its raw design files.
